We’re delighted to be able to share more news of Hydraulics Online being – again – recognised as a powerful force within our local business community. On Friday 12th October, at a glittering ceremony at Chester Cathedral, we were named Exporter of the Year at the Cheshire Business Awards.
The Cheshire Business Awards, with headline sponsors business law firm SAS Daniels LLP, celebrates entrepreneurs and fast-growing businesses in the Cheshire region.
Hydraulics Online was shortlisted in two categories “Business of the Year (up to 10 employees)” alongside Forrest Gin Ltd and Garden Street, and “Exporter of the Year”, alongside Forrest Gin and T-T Pumps. Category sponsor, Scottish Power, noted that we and our fellow shortlisted businesses are all “so very different with unique and inspiring stories to tell”.
Cheshire Exporter of the Year
This year’s awards ceremony was the fifteenth year of the Cheshire Business Awards and excitement was running high ahead of the ceremony on Friday 12th October.
The black-tie dinner was held in the magnificent setting of Chester Cathedral and hosted by Granada Reports and ITN presenter Lucy Meacock, who began her career as a reporter on The Chester Chronicle.
As a shortlisted business, the Hydraulics Online team was delighted to be in attendance and thrilled when the announcement was made that we had won in the Exporter of the Year category.
Hydraulics Online co-founder Helen Tonks said:
It is absolutely amazing to be recognised for the contribution we make to the region and the growth of our business – particularly given the quality of businesses we were up against. The fact that the judges recognised our commitment to excellence in customer service and drive for international growth within our overall success as their global exporter is especially exciting.
Eminent local business people on the judging panel
The judging panel was chaired by Alistair Houghton (pictured above), executive business editor at Reach sister title the Liverpool Echo, and the rest of the panel comprised:
Jeremy Orrell, managing partner and head of the corporate team at SAS Daniels,
Sarah Bailey, relationship manager at NatWest in Chester,
Colin Brew, the CEO from the West Cheshire & North Wales Chamber of Commerce,
Karen Clydesdale, commercial director for Reach plc, Cheshire and North Wales, and
Kaye Whitby, head of the commercial team and the Chester office at SAS Daniels.
Jeremy Orrell told the Cheshire Live reporting team, “The awards are a great opportunity to celebrate the successes of the region. It’s so humbling to see what these businesses have achieved; to see how clever they’ve been and how brave they’ve been.”
Sarah Bailey said:
It was an honour to be a part of the Cheshire Business Awards 2018. There are some remarkable businesses across our region and this year’s entries have really highlighted their passion for innovation and entrepreneurial spirit. The awards are a wonderful way to celebrate their successes and achievements.
Looking forward to the future

While it is rewarding to be recognised for the contribution that we make to the local business sector, we aren’t resting on our laurels.
Our new internationalised website will be launched within the next few weeks and we have big plans to extend our reach through 2019. Despite these big changes and our continuing growth, our commitment to delivering excellent customer service – that sets us apart from the rest of the market – remains our driving goal.
In the short-term we’re also looking forward to this year’s South Cheshire Chamber of Commerce and Industry (SCCCI) awards, where we are also shortlisted as finalists in three award categories: International Trader of the Year, Business of the Year (under 25 employees) and Ambassador of the Year.
It was the award success at the SCCCI awards in November last year that first kicked us off on the trajectory of amazing award wins – five in the last twelve months and recognised as finalists for a further two.
The big night takes place on 23rd November and will mark the end of what has been an incredible year for Hydraulics Online – showcasing just how far we have come since our founding in 2004 while providing firm foundations to deliver on our vision for the future.
We’re recognised inside and outside of our industry for our excellence in customer service, international trade and innovative support and collaborations with third parties!
