    Global Hydraulic Attractions and Landmarks

With over 130 countries served by Hydraulics Online, we’ve seen firsthand just how widespread and impactful hydraulic technology truly is. Hydraulic attractions are more than just feats of fluid power engineering – they can be global landmarks that showcase the power and versatility of hydraulic systems.

After highlighting some of the UK’s most iconic hydraulically powered sites, we’re now continuing our journey to explore seven more spectacular hydraulic attractions from around the world. From awe-inspiring fountains to massive mechanical marvels, these destinations demonstrate how hydraulic engineering continues to shape innovation and inspire wonder.

    1. Glasshouse, Woolbeding Gardens, England

    2. Milwaukee art Museum, Wisconsin, USA

    3. The Louvre, Paris, France

Continuing with striking hydraulic designs at art museums, we head to one of the world’s most iconic cultural institutions: the Louvre Museum in Paris, France.

While the Louvre is best known for housing masterpieces like the “Mona Lisa” and its striking glass pyramid entrance, it also features a hidden gem of hydraulic engineering – an open-top, column-style elevator that’s as elegant as it is functional.

Rather than opting for a conventional lift, the museum’s designers embraced hydraulic technology to create a sculptural experience. Installed in the late 1980s, this unique elevator emerges from the floor on a wide central pillar, rising smoothly through the heart of a spiral staircase. The result is a seamless blend of accessibility and artistry – turning a practical necessity into a kinetic exhibit in its own right.

Though subtle compared to the Louvre’s grand architecture, this hydraulic elevator remains one of the most distinctive and visually captivating accessibility features in anywhere  in the world!

    4. Slauerhoffbrug ("Flying Drawbridge"), Leeuwarden, Netherlands

    5. Dragon Bridge (Pont y Ddraig), Rhyl, Wales

    6. Peterborough Lift Lock, Ontario, Canada

    7. Merchant Square Fan Footbridge, London, England
