Hydraulic Attractions and Landmarks around the World

Home Technical Knowledge Hub Hydraulic Attractions and Landmarks around the World

Introducing you to a diverse world of superb hydraulic engineering applications and designs…

After showcasing a number of hydraulically powered landmarks and attractions that can be found across the UK, we continued to explore a world of fascinating and spectacular designs powered by hydraulic systems. The sheer number and variety was of no surprise to us given that Hydraulics Online has supported customers spanning more than 130 countries. We know that hydraulic engineering is everywhere! In this article, we have handpicked seven of our favourite hydraulic landmarks and attractions around the world.

1. Glasshouse, Woolbeding Gardens, England

2. Milwaukee art Museum, Wisconsin, USA

3. The Louvre, Paris, France

Staying with striking hydraulic designs at art museums, our next attraction is located at the Louvre in Paris.

Home to some of the World’s most well-known artworks, including one of history’s most famous paintings, the “Mona Lisa”, the Louvre has some iconic architecture of its own with its dramatic glass pyramid entrance. However, our eye is on one of the Louvre’s own internal elevators rather than its external architecture or many masterpieces.

Where most buildings would install a simple accessibility elevator, or ‘lift’, the Louvre’s designers seized the opportunity to use hydraulic systems to create another beautiful exhibit. The open-top elevator rises from the ground on a wide pillar which reveals itself from beneath, and ‘grows’ through the centre of a spiral staircase.

This elevator was built in the late 1980s, but we have yet to see any other like it!

4. Slauerhoffbrug ("Flying Drawbridge"), Leeuwarden, Netherlands

5. Dragon Bridge (Pont y Ddraig), Rhyl, Wales

6. Peterborough Lift Lock, Ontario, Canada

7. Merchant Square Fan Footbridge, London, England

We love sharing these incredible examples of hydraulic engineering in action! If you know of any hydraulic attractions from around the world, please let us know at: feedback@hydraulicsonline.com or
