Bent Axis Axial Piston Pumps: Efficient, Durable and Built for Demanding Systems
Bent axis axial piston pumps are renowned for their mechanical efficiency, robust design, and ability to deliver high-pressure performance in compact hydraulic systems. Whether used in mobile machinery, industrial equipment, or energy applications, these pumps offer exceptional reliability and control – even under continuous heavy-duty operation.
Unlike swashplate pumps, bent axis designs feature an angled cylinder block that drives pistons directly, reducing internal friction and improving overall efficiency. This makes them ideal for systems where durability, responsiveness, and long service life are essential.
Performance & Pressure Capabilities
- Operating Pressure: Typically rated for continuous use at 350 – 420 bar
- Displacement Range: Commonly up to 1 litre/rev, with custom builds exceeding 2 litres/rev
- Efficiency: Bent axis pumps are among the most efficient hydraulic pump types available
How Do Bent Axis Axial Piston Pumps Work?
Bent axis pumps use a rotating shaft connected to a cylinder block set at an angle. As the shaft turns, pistons move within the bores of the angled block, creating suction and discharge cycles with each revolution.
This design eliminates the need for a swashplate, reducing wear and improving mechanical efficiency. The angle between the drive shaft and cylinder block determines the piston stroke – and therefore the displacement volume.
Bent axis pumps are available in both fixed and variable displacement configurations, and some models can also operate as hydraulic motors, offering flexibility in system design.
Fixed vs Variable Displacement Bent Axis Pumps
Bent axis axial piston pumps are available in two primary configurations:
- Fixed Displacement: Provides a uniform flow rate with each shaft rotation – ideal for systems where flow demand remains steady
- Variable Displacement: Modulates output in response to system load, enhancing energy efficiency and control without altering the speed of the drive source
These pumps can be equipped with advanced control mechanisms – including load sensing, pressure regulation, and automatic cut-off – enabling them to adapt fluid delivery in real time to match operational requirements.
