Invented by Johannes Kepler in the 1600s, gear pumps have evolved into a cornerstone of hydraulic systems. Here’s how they operate:

Two gears rotate inside a tightly sealed housing. As the gears unmesh on the inlet side, they create a vacuum that draws fluid in.
The fluid is carried between the gear teeth around the pump casing.
As the gears mesh again on the outlet side, the fluid is compressed and expelled under pressure.

Because gear pumps are fixed displacement, they move a consistent volume of fluid with each revolution – making them ideal for systems requiring predictable flow rates.
